Sometimes when I review a case. or talk to a person, an idea or determination comes to mind. I just know what to do, or what is going on. Clients, friends and family will ask me, "How do you know?" and my answer most of the time is, "I just do" and I can't pinpoint why.

I am truly a believer in "Gut Feelings" as those gut feelings kept me alive on the street for many years. It still saves me today in both my work and my personal life.

A lot of times though, because you can't elaborate on the why or where the information is coming from, you distrust it and don't pay attention to it. You do what is "right" or what you "should" do or just try to please someone else, and you ignore what your body is telling you.

For me, the easiest way to explain "gut feelings" or "intuition" is like the saying goes above. I believe your brain is like a big video camera and it has stored images and words and situations from all of the interactions you have participated in during your life.

When a new situation comes up, much like a computer searching for a file or for the correct answer to a query, your brain automatically scans your "history" and analyzes it and says "wait a minute here" or "we've seen this before."

For cops and the military, and some long time investigators, we have heard and seen so much and most of it involves lying, evasion, danger or fraud. Because of this, we have a keen and quick ability to say, "Whoa" although we may not know immediately why.

The breakdown occurs when you do not stop to evaluate this feeling, whether good or bad, and instead make a quick decision on the conscious level.

This intuition or gut feeling can be very helpful and it sometime necessary for the type of work we do. Much like the doctor or surgeon who takes a set of symptoms to make a diagnoses, a trained or seasoned investigator can use their skills to provide expertise on a case where someone else may not recognize the pattern.

The next time you have a gut feeling, don't ignore it and instead take a moment to think about why you are feeling this way. If you still can't figure it out, give us a call and let us see if we can recognize something that you can't.
